IK Multimedia | UNO Synth Pro X
I can't believe that I started to record this video over three and a half months ago. It's been a long time coming, my youtube channel is in neglect, an incredibly sad close family situation that I prefer not to openly discuss has occupied my heart and mind and still does today.
But here anyway, and finally, is my long overdue tribute to the Uno Synth Pro X, a wonderful instrument that everyone seems to overlook these days. In a world where synth releases costing multiple thousands are now becoming "the norm", I honestly think we need to re-evaluate our desires, our budgets, and our needs. The Uno Synth Pro X is a true budget synth that punches very far above its weight. And no, I am not ...

This is one of my favourite digital synths of all time, from it's user interface to its sound to its power and wide range of capabilities. But it's a synth for patch-building, you need to see past many of those rather cliched factory presets. There's way too much to cover in a single video so I've had to miss out a lot of the detail, but even so this video has ended up being ONE HOUR long!!!!!

Why would you put out a video like this for something that you like enough to buy later on the used market? That said, I appreciate your analysis of some of this synth’s idiosyncrasies. That analysis along with the comments here with workarounds for some of these idiosyncrasies will help me with my Syntrx II that’s on the way.

      Thank you so much 🙏 Good question. It's been a very long time since I programmed user oscillators. I'm totally out of practice! But to be honest I got a bit frustrated with Korg, I invested a huge amount of time developing my "DW" and "VS" user oscillators, and then Korg came out with their all digital modwave synth which has so many features that overlap with what I developed. Unfortunate coincidence of course! But their lack of interest in taking the prologue and minilogue XD any further forward was also a big factor. Why invest time inventing digital synth capability for their ageing line-up of "logue" synths if the very next month they might wipe you out with yet another all digital product that duplicates what you developed? If I see serious investment in the user oscillator concept again from them then I'll definitely reconsider, it was such a great concept and I am sure it boosted sales for them immensely.

    So Helpful, Tim, that you take the time to Explain your INs/Outs on Cubase. I use Cubase (transitioning from 11 pro to 13 pro. Back to my remark, most creators just presume that their audience just KNOWS everything about connections. That is NOT the case, so thanks for the Connections DETAIL. Equally helpful, your recording techniques provided, i.e., the fading out segment on track X, as your fade in track Y so that you get the same sound clip playing throughout this song, rather than a single track that continues to morph or evolve throughout (for what you wanted in this specific song)

    Hey Tim. Off topic question, if you please. About to embark on Behringer pro 800 number 2. Knee jerk, I thought: I need to Buy Tim’s POLY-CHAINING SOFTWARE. I watched Daniel Fisher of Sweetwater DEMO a 2 Pro 800s setup. He said, ‘connect both synths to DAW, pain one Left and one Right and yours done!’ Well, the Pro 800 does NOT have poly chaining built in, so I guess Daniel just had two Cubase tracks with panning left and right ? Anyway, with YOUR SOFTWARE ,I’d have far more Choices about note allocations, wouldbt I ? A restatement of my connections: If You were going to connect 2 Pro 800 synths for the purpose of havingn16 voices instead of 8, and you had no Poly Chain software, how would you do it? Thanks! Mark

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge 4 дня назад

      Hi. The idea of my polychain software is that it allocates notes dynamically to your synths as you play (or playback using a DAW). The software knows what notes you have held down, are still playing, maybe you have sustained them, etc etc, it knows the polyphony count of your synths and can allocate notes optimally. Just connecting two synths directly to a DAW without something intelligent doing the note allocation is not extending your effective polyphony, it is just playing two synths at the same time. If you buy the polychain software you can always ask for a refund within a reasonable timeframe if it does not work out for you, Cherry Audio are great in this regard re. Voltage Modular modules 👍

      @@watchaddicts1213He's just playing the same notes on both synths at the same time. The fact that the synths are analogue means the sound will be very subtly different at any point in time, so if you pan one hard left and the other hard right you will get a pleasing stereo effect. If you use an external clock to advance the sequencer you can in fact add rests. Use one of it's own voltage banks to control the frequency of the external clock, then adjust the amount of control voltage at any given step by increasing the voltage at that step to slow the external clock down and in effect, add a rest.

  • @PeterGrenader

    14:45 No way to limit the numbers of steps? Huh? This module has a reset button and a reset trigger input. You absolutely can limit the number of steps. By either pressing the reset button, using an external signal to reset it back to step 1 or use one the it's own Position Gates to do it.

    First of all, I always go to your videos when I’m considering a synth. I own an Iridium keyboard and I’m seriously considering a 3RD WAVE. Do you think there is too much overlap between the two synths, or do you think they compliment each other? And thank you for your continual gift of discovery, You are a gem.

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge 3 дня назад

      Thank you so much 🙏 There are definitely overlaps when it comes to synth engines: First you have their shared ability to play wavetables and most recently with 3rd Wave's firmware update you have the shared ability to play samples. But both synths have their own strengths: for example the Iridium has an exemplary polyphonic aftertouch keyboard and extremely flexible sample manipulation capabilities, while the 3rd Wave is 4-part multi-timbral and 24 voice polyphonic. But I think the biggest difference is the user interface, like it or not you are centred around that touch screen on the Iridium, whereas the whole way of interacting with the 3rd Wave is far more traditional and dare I say retro. I have the 3rd Wave and Iridium and I feel there is definitely a place for both in my studio, but then again I have the Iridium desktop which further differentiates it from the 3rd Wave. I think if you have the budget - and the room! - and if wavetable synthesis was the main thing that drew you to the Iridium in the first place, then the 3rd Wave really is a synth to be considered, it is the most powerful and capable wavetable synth I've ever used.

Keyboard tracking is also an assignable modulation source for all seperate routings plus the mod matrix. Try a sync or ringmod sound with negative keytrack on osc pitch(!). And then lfo1 speed too, modulating the filter. Really wild.
